ARTIST STATEMENT

Mixed media artist, expressing the moods of the wild coastal landscape using bold brushstrokes and palette knife mark making to create semi-abstract textured paintings. Veronica's artistic practice transcends a combination of traditional and digital forms of artwork, creating surprising results. This combination surpasses the conventions between physical paintings in the digital age.

Originally from Poland, Veronica now lives in Blackpool, a seaside town on the Irish Sea coast of England which is often reflected in her work. The shifting light from the constantly changing skies, the crashing waves and the gloomy clouds is the main source of inspiration for Veronica. Different mediums allow Veronica to explore her own ways of expressing herself.

BIO

I am currently in my third year of studying Fine Art and Professional Practice in Blackpool School of Arts. My current project, ‘The call of the sea’ is a series of large panoramic paintings. In these paintings, the use of gold leaf reflects the light and movement of the ever-changing sea and sky. The light reveals the colours and reflections in the gold differently each time. The choice of the enlarged size and scale is to immerse my audience to experience the work of art and connect with it. I want the audience to be surrounded by my paintings, making them feel part of and inside of it.

Painting is like therapy for me, time to express my feelings and thoughts. The sea represents a place where I feel safe and calm. The use of contrasting light and dark colours illustrate the mood changes in the horizons. I explore the contradicting emotions of the sea which change all the time. I want my work to evoke feelings by depicting the sea and sky as separate emotions. It is my intention to make anyone who sees my work connect with the sea.

RESEARCH

The purpose of this dissertation is to investigate how the development and consumption of digital technology has changed the way art is produced and experienced today. Its aim is to analyse the significance of traditional art in the digital age. This dissertation will provide some important insights into the differences between traditional and digital forms of art. Throughout this dissertation, the term ‘’Post-Internet’’ will be used to refer to the artworks after the internet. The research begins with an introduction of the historical view of the term and how its definition changed over the years. The importance of the authenticity of artworks is brought into question which is affected by this movement. It examines the distinctions between digital and traditional art, specifically in paintings. Key artists and works are illustrated to demonstrate how digital technology is affecting artistic practices. Lastly, the predictions on what the future may hold are raised, and examples of how art is responding to the new developments of technology are shown. This dissertation will be using the methodology of a qualitative, secondary research in an attempt to analyse the significance of traditional art in the 21st century. This method is most suitable because it refers to the current debates on the use of digital technology in arts.
